Great Racing on “Open Wheel Monday” at I-70 Speedway Odessa, MO (May 28, 2007) Well, the third time was the charm Monday afternoon at the Dirt Track at I-70 Speedway. After rain canceled Saturday and Sunday’s “Toyota Open Wheel Weekend”, a full show featuring the SMRS Midget Series, Midwest Outlaw Lighting Sprints and the I-70 Speedway Sprint Cars, was completed on Memorial Day. “We sealed the track on Saturday preparing for the rain that came in on Saturday and Sunday”, commented I-70 Owner, Brad McDonald. “We told the teams that were here on Saturday that we would run the event on Sunday and if we could not get Sunday in, we would run the show on Monday”. “Most everyone stayed, and every class put on one whale of a show”, concluded McDonald.
22 Midgets checked in and those moving from their Heat Races to the Pole Dash were: 36 Jonathon Beason, 199 Donnie Ray Crawford, 35 Matt Sherrell, 999 Gary Taylor, 1c Chad McDaniel and the 01 of Gregg Lueckart. Winner of the 20 lap Midget A Feature was the # 199 of Donnie Ray Crawford. Behind Crawford was the 36 of Jonathon Beason, 999 Gary Taylor, 35 Matt Sherrell, 1c Chad McDaniel, 12c Rick England, 09 Russ Harper, 1 Joe Boyles, 31 Donnie Lehman, 1t Tony Roney, 4p Ron Kuhn, 61a Kevin Battle, 0 Rick Jackson, 05 Mike Riley, 31x Chris Walker, 7m Todd McVay, 3 Rob Simpson, 5ma Mallory Armfield, 10p Will Pearce, 31L, Bobby Lather, 01 Gregg Lueckart and the #21 of Steve Stroud.
The Midwest Outlaw Lighting Sprints 20 lap A Feature saw veteran driver Pill Heavelow cross the finish line first in his #44 Lighting Sprint, for the second time in as many trips to the I-70 Dirt Track. Behind Heavelow was the 58 of Frank Ikerd, 4 Beau Heavelow, X James Bevan, 9s Chris Schofield, 25 Donnie Graves, 18 John Eaton and the #46 driven by Dusty Murray. The #9 of Joe Lackner did not make the call for the A Feature.
16 Sprint Cars checked in for the class with only two rules, 1. It must be a full size Sprint Car and 2. No Wings. Transferring from their Heat Races to the Pole Dash was the #77 of Jessie Hockett, 3 Rob Hockett, 24 Alan Billings, 96c Jim Cameron, 43 Frank Brown and the 36L of Joe Larkin. Starting from the pole, Jessie Hockett, in the #77 Sprinter named Frankenstein; lead all 20 laps of the Sprint Car A Feature. Following close behind Hockett was the #24 of Alan Billings, 43 Frank Brown, 82 Michael Brown, 3 Rod Hockett, 7j J.D. Black, 49 Zack Goulden, 12 Ryan Rector, 2 Russ Brown, 88 Chad Tye, 36L Joe Larkin, 49r John Rowland, 1k Kim Kennedy, 96c Jim Cameron and the #5m of Mallory Armfield. The #44 of Phil Heavelow was unable to make the A Feature start.
The next event on the Dirt Track at I-70 will be “Five Dollar Friday”, featuring the IMCA Crate Models, Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods, Sport Compacts and “Farm Truck Racing”. Pit Gates open at 5:00; Admission Gates open at 6:00. Hot Laps begin at 7:30 with Racing at 8:15. And, as always, general admission prices are only $5.00.
